Check the key in your inventory tab each time you open a door with it. If you notice a small red check mark on its icon, that means it's outlived its usefulness and can be manually discarded.

Really threw me off because the plugs also didn't have the red-checkmark for "item served its purpose" so I thought I might have to use them again. Maybe it's because they still have a use if you didn't collect everything in the gate room. It seems like a minor oversight. Webtwinfinite.net
